Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an independent, holistic form of medicine in which diagnosis and treatment are performed exclusively with the hands. It was developed over 150 years ago by the American physician Andrew Taylor Still. At the heart of its philosophy lies the assumption that the body forms an inseparable unit. All structures, from bones and muscles to organs and the nervous system, are interconnected via a fine network of connective tissue called fascia.

According to this view, healthy bodily function is only guaranteed when the mobility of all structures and the flow of bodily fluids (blood, lymph) are unimpeded. Dysfunction in one area can therefore manifest as pain or discomfort in a completely different part of the body. The goal of osteopathic treatment is to find and resolve the cause of these dysfunctions in order to activate the body's own self-healing powers and restore harmony within the system.

The treatment session typically lasts about one hour. Depending on the type and duration of your symptoms, 3 to 6 treatments are often necessary to achieve lasting improvement.

This is how an osteopathic treatment proceeds:

Treatment always begins with a detailed consultation. During this consultation, your current symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle will be discussed to obtain a comprehensive picture of your health.

This is followed by the assessment: Through inspection (visual evaluation of your posture and movement) and palpation (feeling with the hands), movement restrictions, tensions, and blockages in various body regions are evaluated. The entire body is examined from head to toe.

The subsequent treatment involves gentle manual techniques. Through targeted mobilizations, stretches, and pressure on tissues, joints, muscles, and fascia, any blockages found are released. This activates your body's self-healing powers to achieve lasting relief from your symptoms.

The BAO quality standard:

The profession of osteopath is not legally protected in Germany/EU. To guarantee you the highest quality and safety, I completed my training according to the strict guidelines of the German Federal Association of Osteopaths (BAO). BAO-certified training ensures a sound, long-term, and scientifically based qualification comprising over 1,350 hours of instruction. This allows you to be confident that your treatments are performed at a recognized and professional level. Please note that the treatments offered here are based on my certified 5-year training in Germany and are solely for health promotion and prevention.

THE THREE PILLARS OF OSTEOPATHY

PARIETAL OSTEOPATHY
In parietal osteopathy, the joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles and fascia are examined and treated for movement restrictions.

CRANIO-SACRAL OSTEOPATHY
In cranial osteopathy, subtle movements of the skull bones, the sacrum, and the associated fluids and connective tissue membranes are examined and treated.

VISCERAL OSTEOPATHY
In visceral osteopathy, the internal organs and their surrounding structures are examined and treated for movement restrictions.

THE BASIC PRINCIPLES

1.

The human being is a dynamic functional unit whose well-being is determined by

Body, mind and soul are affected.

2.

The organism has self-regulating mechanisms and the natural

Ability to heal oneself.

MY HANDS - MY MOST IMPORTANT TOOL

"With thinking, feeling, seeing, knowing fingers"

(translated: "with thinking, seeing, knowing fingers"). This is an attempt to describe how an osteopath's hands touch the body. With "thinking, feeling, seeing, knowing fingers," I perceive the finest nuances in the tissue, striving to release tensions and blockages on a physical or mental level. The most important tools are therefore my hands and the ability to feel (palpation), to touch consciously, to sense without judgment, and to listen.

THE BODY AS A UNITY

"LIFE IS MOVEMENT." — Quote: Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathy —

The body is a functional unit. This means that the origin of complaints can often be found far from the location of the symptom.

Osteopathy is not limited to the treatment of symptoms, but rather considers the person as a whole and gets to the bottom of the causes of complaints.

It follows a salutogenic approach: that is, the focus is not primarily on the patient's complaints or illnesses, but on their individual health. The goal is to promote and maintain the body's self-healing powers.

Osteopathy for pregnant women and children

Osteopathy can positively influence the course of a pregnancy. The body is in a state of flux, and blockages can occur more frequently. Common symptoms include back pain, rib pain, headaches, radiating pain into the legs or buttocks, and symphysis pubis dysfunction.

Furthermore, childbirth can be made more difficult by existing blockages in the sacroiliac region or by fascial tension, for example in the pelvic floor.

Postnatal treatments are also beneficial. The mother's organs need time to return to their original positions. Occasionally, this process is hindered by fascial adhesions or scar tissue (after a cesarean section) and can be treated with osteopathy.

Reasons for consultation regarding babies and children may include:

Crying babies, asymmetries, breastfeeding problems, digestive problems or sleep disorders, falls in children, dental alignment problems.

For which complaints is osteopathy useful?

Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Back pain, lumbago, sciatica

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Joint problems (e.g., knee, hip, elbow)

  • Tension, restricted movement

  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD)

  • Poor posture, pelvic tilt, scoliosis

Functional disorders in the head area
  • Tension headaches, migraines (accompanying)

  • Dizziness without a clear organic cause

  • Tinnitus (functionally caused)

  • Jaw, facial or eye problems caused by muscle tension

Respiratory and cardiovascular systems (functionally determined)
  • Respiratory restrictions, diaphragmatic tension

  • Asthma (in conjunction with medical treatment)

  • Circulatory problems or functional chest complaints

Digestive and organ problems
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, feeling of fullness

  • Heartburn / Reflux

  • Constipation or diarrhea without any organic cause

  • Scar adhesions after surgery

Gynecology and Pregnancy
  • Menstrual cramps, PMS

  • Support for those wishing to have children

  • Discomfort during pregnancy (e.g., back pain, sacroiliac joint problems)

  • Postpartum recovery and scar treatment

Osteopathy for babies and children
  • Skull asymmetries, KISS syndrome

  • Breastfeeding and swallowing problems

  • Three-month colic, flatulence

  • Developmental difficulties, motor restlessness

  • Poor posture, scoliosis

Stress-related symptoms and exhaustion
  • Sleep disorders, inner restlessness

  • Exhaustion, burnout (accompanying symptoms)

  • Physical ailments caused by chronic stress

Please note:

Osteopathy does not replace medical diagnosis or emergency care. However, it can be a useful, holistic complement to treatment for many functional disorders. In cases of acute or unclear symptoms, a medical evaluation is important beforehand.
